6.50 Hrs/Day Paraeducator-Special Education

(May work with students with high needs in supervision)

Port Townsend High School

2023-2024 School Year – remainder of the year only

Applicants must meet the “Every Student Succeeds Act” highly qualified requirement through two years of college, or an Associate’s degree or higher; or have passed the ParaPro Assessment Test.  

 

SUPERVISION:

            Supervision of paraeducators is the responsibility of the building principal.

            This position will receive daily direction from the building Special Education Teacher.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:     

Organizational skills; ability to manage time and materials in a variety of settings

Understands and uses instructional techniques and strategies appropriate to young learners

Toileting, diapering, feeding, transferring and monitoring of student health based on individual needs

Understanding of confidentiality issues

Ability to teach groups of students and maintain student engagement and order in a variety of situations

Ability to work as a positive, confidant and cooperative member of an instructional team

Demonstrated willingness to accept teacher direction regarding the instructional needs of students

Ability to take data on individual student achievement

Ability to work successfully, collaboratively and professionally with students, parents and staff

Practice positive and clear communication skills with children and adults

Initiative balanced with ability to take direction

Ability to use computers

Conflict resolution skills

Valid First Aid/CPR card preferred

Valid Type II Certification or ability to obtain one

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds

Ability to work in a small group setting teaching basic skills

Sense of humor

Skilled use of, or willingness to learn, educational computer applications, electronic communications

and basic word processing

Other duties as assigned

 

EXPERIENCE:

It is highly desirable that candidates have experience in the following areas:

  1. working in an instructional support role with students
  2. working with special needs students and at-risk youth
  3. working with students exhibiting challenging/disruptive behaviors
  4. Using technology for educational purposes
  5. Working collaboratively with co-workers

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Major responsibilities include:

  1. Implement and monitor student’s educational program under direction of Special Education teacher
  2. be knowledgeable about student's program, goals and objectives
  3. implement programs and provide assistance to students as directed, including communication and specific behavior plans
  4. observe and gather data about student's progress and development
  5. set up and maintain student files, data collection, and records
  6. demonstrate flexibility in working in a changing educational environment
  7. Support students to maintain appropriate behavior and safety in the school environment
  8. follow established discipline guidelines and behavior plans
  9. participate in evaluation of student behavior and needs
  10. maintain professional composure to work through stressful situations with students and staff
  11. Work successfully with students, parents, and staff
  12. establish positive relationships with students
  13. communicate professionally with parents and staff
  14. establish productive role with staff
  15. demonstrate flexibility in working in a variety of settings

Salary Range:  $20.72 - $25.49, Depending on school experience
