Position Opening Announcement: Library Technician
6.5 Hr/Day, Districtwide
2024-25 School Year

Applicants must meet the “Every Student Succeeds Act” highly qualified requirement through two years of college, or an Associate’s degree or higher; or have passed the ParaPro Assessment Test. This position is subject to the SEIU Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Summary
Library paraeducators are persons trained and skilled in the areas of technical services who provide support to the District Librarian in maintaining the efficient operation of Port Townsend School District Library Media Centers. The paraeducator has the ability to work independently and manage continual interruptions and shifting job priorities. They should possess excellent word processing and database skills, as well as a strong interest in working with students and the public. The library paraeducator is responsible through the District Librarian to the school principal.
Qualifications
- Experience working with and supervising middle and high school students
- Experience in Technical Services and cataloging records, subject headings, Dewey Classification, MARC cataloging, collection development basics, collection development policy and building collections
- Knowledge and experience with project-based or place-based learning.
- Experience working in a library, including confidence in using Dewey decimal system to find and shelve books and assist students in finding books
- Able to maintain a friendly, inviting and productive atmosphere for students and faculty
- Familiarity with children’s and middle school and high school literature
- Ability to run a variety of technology equipment, including Chromebooks, laptops, digital projectors, and problem-solve difficulties for staff, students and families
- Ability to collaborate and contribute in a team
- Demonstration of good basic skills in reading, writing and mathematics
- Good communication and time management skills
- Skills in word processing, databases, and digital file management
- Ability to supervise large groups of students
- Ability to lift boxes of books up to 50 pounds
- Demonstrated ability to work well independently amidst shifting priorities and frequent interruptions
- Good attendance is essential
Responsibilities
Under the direction of the District Librarian, the library technician is responsible for:
- Management of the circulation desk and carrying out of establish procedures for using the Polaris Library database and check out system.
- Prepare and distribute overdue notices
- Update student records, add new students into Polaris Database
- Troubleshoot student patron account issues
- Issue new library cards to incoming students
- Stay up-to-date in Polaris ILS changes and usage guidelines
- Maintains confidentiality of student and staff records
- Collaborates with public library partners to remedy student fines and fees
- Supervision and upkeep of library shelves and reserve collections
- Work with consortium libraries to pull materials on hold and distribute in timely manner.
- Shelve and retrieve materials
- Set up reserve collection for classes/teachers
- Keep shelves clean and orderly
- Preparation and processing of materials for circulation
- Catalog materials into Polaris Integrated Library System for the PT Schools Libraries
- Process and shelve new materials
- Collaborate with District Librarian when issues arise during cataloging and processing
- Annually weed and inventory books based on Collection Development Procedures
- Contribute to making lists of materials (e.g., books, periodicals and databases) for purchase consideration using collection development criteria
- Direction and supervision of adult and student volunteers
- Keep student assistants busy and instruct them to carry out library tasks
- Provides basic guidance for students and faculty in the use of the library resources: online catalog, location of items in the collection, databases, library websites, applications on computers, and multimedia equipment.
- Instruct students and staff in how to use online catalog to find materials in collection
- Learn new databases and applications as they become integral in the library
- Maintain database of requested materials.
- Update records and notify requestor when materials are in and ready to circulate
- Maintains and updates databases of purchase orders
- Verifies invoices against shipments and orders
- Aids in the preparation of library publications (flyers, reminder notices, etc.)
- Collaborates with the District Librarian in Realm of Reading Advocacy: book talks, refers staff and students to appropriate books of interest; shares passion for reading with students
- Generates reports of usage, circulation, etc.
- Assists with displays and other special projects
- Helps maintain readiness and check out of library technology
- Monitors student behavior in library and helps to maintain a friendly, cooperative and productive atmosphere for students, faculty and parents
- Guides students to learn library procedures and enforces procedures (use of passes, signing into library, no food or beverages, respectful behavior, etc.)
- Communicates regularly with District Librarian on library topics and concerns
- Collaborates with the District Librarian on projects and special collections
- Support implementation of family engagement themes throughout each month
- Performs other related duties that may be assigned by the teacher-librarian

Salary Range: $24.00 - $29.52, depending on school experience and in accordance with the SEIU collective bargaining agreement
